A Jesus Tree1 Corinthians 6:9b-11a
Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were.
Thoughts for Today:My daughter Amanda and I were driving around doing errands the other day. As she sat quietly in the front seat gazing out the window, I asked, "What are you thinking about?" She answered, "You know how trees are named for what they do -- apple trees make apples, so they're called apple trees. I was wondering, if I was a tree, what I would be called?" I think Amanda's thought pretty well captures Paul's point in our passage today: people like trees, are known for the fruit they produce.
As Amanda and I talked, she came up with a long list of her tree types: Dancer tree, Singer tree, Friend tree, Sister tree, Swimmer tree, etc. I asked her, "When you get older, do you think you will be a different type of tree?" She said, "Probably, because I'll be a mommy too. But, do you know what the most important tree is?" "Tell me," I said. She answered, "A Jesus tree."
Questions to Ponder:It doesn't matter what you were; what matters is what you are. If a man like a tree is known for its fruit, what are you producing? Are you a "Jesus Tree", or something else?
