By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh." But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
Thoughts for Today:In the heat of sexual desire, spiritual things may seem very far removed. But in reality they aren't. Typically within the root of lustful passion is found the desire for love, acceptance, and in some cases, adventure. Paul tells us all of those are more completely satisfied in our relationship with the Lord -- who has given us marriage to explore our desire for physical intimacy -- rather than the emptiness of sexual immorality.
Paul also gives us one more reason to avoid sexual sin: it brings agony to the Lord. How so? Because when we become Christians we are linked with Jesus in body and spirit. Paul understands and embraces this concept so completely that when he considers a believer's sexual encounter with a prostitute, he shockingly shouts, "Never!"
Here's the main point Paul wants us to consider related to this topic: Whenever we become involved in an immoral behavior, we bring Christ with us and into, every aspect of the relationship. Now that's a pretty sobering thought!
Questions to Ponder:Previously Paul told us that sexual immorality destroys us physically and spiritually. Today he tells us it also brings agony to Jesus. Why then do so many Christians fall victim to immoral behavior? How do we remain pure in a contaminated world? Have you become tainted? Return now to the Lord. Your life has been redeemed by the blood of Jesus. Will you live for Him?
